When you are ready for your CFS & Fibromyalgia treatment it is important that you step outside yourself and ask yourself “Who am I and what do I want?” Because, anxiety, fear and a victim point of view (sorry, but it’s true) are the three facets we have encountered time and time again in those people who experience anxiety disorders, such as, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Adrenal Fatigue, Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS) and Fibrositis Fibromyalgia (FFS).
Experiencing these painful and tiring episodes can place a huge amount of worry on the individual, worrying about their health, feeling guilty about letting people down, feeling guilty about needing help, feeling trapped by the exhaustion, feeling bad about taking time off of work, not knowing exactly why they have it or what it really is and the general negativity of not seeing any way out of the situation.
There is a huge correlation between anxiety and CFS
Along with OCD, this group of chronic fatigue based disorders is the most debilitating and restrictive, however, they nearly always only happen to people who have low self-esteem, are self-conscious and who feel that they don’t quite have the full resources to help themselves. In many instances (when they were healthy) they had the ability to put on a brave face or to mask their insecurities, however, underneath, they don’t quite feel good enough and often have low self-worth (even if they are successful and intelligent).
These fatigue based conditions are your bodies own defense system hijacking you to tell you that the way you are living and responding to life is just not working, and your body would like you to make some changes! Of course, you might not know what those changes are, but we do, and we can offer you sensible and compelling fibromyalgia treatment.
Physical symptoms of CFS versus the mental symptoms
There is a huge divide and a huge overlap between how people with ME think and how they feel – yet the two fuel each other and tend to keep the person unknowingly trapped.
- Feelings of complete exhaustion
- Aching joints & fatigued muscles
- Frequent high intensity headaches
- Tiredness & insomnia
- Inability to focus for long periods
- Apathy and negativity
- Muscular pain
- Sensitivity to light / heat / cold
- Sore throats and colds
- Upset stomach – IBS like symptoms
- Painful lymph nodes and glands
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Depression and low motivation
- Nausea and acid reflux
- Why can’t I stop it?
- If it goes, will it come back?
- Why are Doctors so vague?
- Will pushing myself make it worse?
- How will I manage without help?
- Why do I feel guilty about getting help?
- What should I avoid?
- What should I do?
- What should I eat / not eat?
- Why me?
- Who would want me?
- Are people judging me?
- Do they think I am pretending?
- Is there any point to my life?
It can be so frustrating to live with these conditions because much of the medical world classify CFS in the “I can see you have a real problem, however, we don’t know exactly what it is…” category, along with conditions such as, IBS and overwhelming panic attacks! The very prevalence of these conditions point to the reality, however, medicine and tests can’t pin point their manifestation or continuation.
Unfortunately, for many Fibromyalgia sufferers it is only too easy to fall into a mind set of submission to the illness because it feels so debilitating and because you don’t know how to overcome it. Sadly this is the worse thing that you can do. As you follow our CFS & Fibromyalgia Treatment Program you’ll see that there many strategies that can be adopted that will allow you to take control of your feelings, emotions and energy.
Caring for them versus caring for you
Many individuals who become overwhelmed with chronic fatigue tend to be caring type characters and often they fuel their own self-worth by helping other people and putting friends and families needs before their own. Of course, this is kind and noble, however, not very good for the individual as it takes a lot of emotional energy to worry about others and to do things for them even if (deep down) you don’t want to.
It also takes a lot of energy to resist fear based emotions, for example; if you feel uncomfortable saying no to a friend and help them out of a belief that you ought to rather than want to, often puts an emotional negative strain on our body and starts an internal dialogue in our minds that starts to blame them and berates our-self.
Therefore, one of the most important aspects of overcoming CFS / ME / Fibromyalgia etc. Is to begin to become a little more selfish and to learn how to say no to people and how to become more comfortable putting your own needs (emotional, financial, sexual, space, time, social) first, without feeling guilty or as if you have let anyone down.
So, at a fundamental level, CFD / CFS is an anxiety disorder that exhausts the unconscious nervous system into submission, where it then kicks back to tell you that it has had enough of all of your constant thinking, worrying and nervous behaviour (feeling the victim to other people / events) – it basically hijacks you to tell you to DO SOMETHING & STOP THINKING! We gently teach you how to stop worrying on the CFS & Fibromyalgia treatment course and this is one of the fundamental requirements for CFS / ME recovery.
For most people, they don’t understand this and what they do is worry more and try harder to please others whilst still feeling bad about doing what id right for themselves, thus locking themselves in a very ugly and uncomfortable loop of restrictive behaviour, incessant thinking and chronic fatigue.
Learning to treat the problem rather than the symptom of CFS
If you are smart you’ll begin to see that there is little point trying to treat the symptoms if you are doing nothing to mitigate the underlying causes. That would be like putting a plaster over a splinter that is stuck in your finger, of course, we need to get to the real problem and remove the splinter from your life.
The splinter is:
- A lack of self confidence
- Low self-esteem
- Living in fear (losing job, financial worry, relationship worry)
- Inability to say no to others
- Negative self talk in your mind
- Low motivation
- A feeling that you need support from others
- A fear of the future – What would I do? Who would I be?
- Issues with weight, food, alcohol
- Generally not loving yourself
These are the underlying issues that need to be dealt with and when they are, things change at every level in your life!
Stop being overwhelmed by the future
As you follow the CFS & Fibromyalgia treatment program you’ll begin to see that you can re-train for a new career or excel as a parent, find a new lover or face up to bullies or respond to the pressures of a controlling parent in a new way. Often those types of positive thoughts can seem too large to handle when your immune system has been compromised and you feel drained and in pain. However, this is one of the most important aspects of recovery and we spend a lot of time helping you to generate the desire for a completely new future.
Are your family trapping you or helping you?
For some people their family is unknowingly hindering their progress – the mother who says “Poor you, don’t you worry I ‘ll do that for you” is just not helping in the right way and equally the father who says “Just pull yourself together” is not helping either.
Carers occasionally are getting their own needs met by having a ‘patient’ to look after and may unknowingly perpetuate the illness in a child or partner to give themselves a role rather than facing moving on in life. Or a child my resort to this victim modality to escape bullying or academic over-load from parents who pressure them to perform.
Either way, in my experience it takes a brave person to say “You know, I do have a stake in my wellness and I want to do everything I can to change the way I think, feel and react to life!” If this is you, we’d love to teach you what needs to happen so you can regain control of mind, which in-turn, gives you control of your body again.
