Anxiety and OCD keep you stuck in the content of the latest thought. Learn why moving to context and changing perspective is how you grow into someone the old loop cannot run.
Get Out of the Content
Anxiety and OCD live in the content.
The thought. The image. The sensation. The sentence you might have said. The hob. The look. The memory that will not sit still. The mind treats that item as the whole problem, then demands a verdict before you are allowed to live.
Content is what the story is about.
Context is the situation around it: who you are, what else is true, what you actually want today, what the body is doing, what the other person can carry.
Perspective is the angle you look from. Same facts. Different meaning.
You will never know “the truth” in the way the anxious mind wants it, because truth depends on all three. One person will not wear an unironed shirt. Another never irons. Neither is the law of shirts. One wastes a lot of energy. That is the only measure that matters if calmness is the aim.
Stuck people argue with the content. They try to prove the thought false, or make the feeling finish, or get someone else to sign the feared story off. That is why reassurance fades. You resolved today’s item. Tomorrow the filter serves another. Pure OCD is especially good at this. Harm, sex, religion, the relationship, the body, existence. Chase the file and you stay the old person with a new folder.
Growth is learning to step sideways.
Context first
You had a frightening image while holding your child. The content screams character. The context is that you are a person who cares, that intrusive thoughts hunt what you value, that concern is not the same as intent, that you are tired, that this theme has visited before and left no crime scene.
You checked the hob again. The content says fire. The context is a cooker designed to be on, a detector on the wall, a partner who already looked, a nervous system that uses “done” as a feeling rather than a fact.
You cannot always change the flash of content. You can almost always widen the frame.
Then perspective
The old perspective is: this thought is a message I must solve.
A newer one is: this is mental noise plus a body state plus a habit of hunting certainty.
The old perspective is: I am unsafe until I know.
A newer one is: I can feel unsure and still walk toward what I intend and desire.
The old perspective is: if I stop watching the content, something terrible will happen.
A newer one is: watching the content is how the system stays employed.
Perspective is not pretending the outer world is fine. It is choosing which inner dream you will inhabit while the outer world does what it does. The kitchen does not change. What gets to be the centre of the picture does.
Why this is how you become someone new
The person stuck in content is loyal to doubt, fear and pessimism. They need the item to resolve before they act. They use intelligence as a microscope on the speck.
The person who can move to context and perspective is practising trust, courage and optimism. Trust is going on without the guarantee. Courage is feeling the fear and still taking the next step. Optimism is briefing the brain toward the life you want rather than toward the disaster it is so good at inventing.
That is not a personality transplant. It is a different use of the same mind. The clever ones often struggle most, because they can generate infinite content. The way out is not a better argument. It is refusing to live in the argument.
In the moment you can ask, as I do: am I lost in the content, or can I look at the context? Would another perspective make this smaller? Which part of me is speaking, the eight year old or the rider? What is my intention for this hour?
Then you act from the wider view. That action is ERP. Not only touching the feared object. Aiming your life at who you wish to become, and not letting the old response veto it.
You will still get content. Senses are clumsy. Beliefs still filter what the night files and what the RAS serves in the day. The work is to stop treating the latest item as the meaning of your life.
Get out of the content. Use the context. Change the perspective. That is how anxiety and OCD lose the job of running you.

These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness, and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who stay in thinking and worrying.
What do you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
