Truth and Sabotage in Complex Anxiety & OCD

Summary of Lecture 30 from John Glanvill’s Understanding Anxiety Course.

Most clever people with complex anxiety or Pure OCD are sabotaging their own recovery without realising it.

They are not doing it deliberately. Their ego is simply protecting the version of “truth” it currently believes. That truth is built from childhood programming, cultural messages, family rules, old diagnoses, and a lifetime of virtual-reality stories about how the world works and what is possible. The mind then uses that limited information to decide what is safe, what is possible, and what is pointless to even try.

This video looks at that process in detail.

Your mind forever tells you who you are, what you want, why something will not work, and even what other people are thinking or will do next. That last one is particularly absurd. How could you possibly know? You are only guessing based on your own domestication and life experiences, not theirs. Yet the mind presents these guesses as solid fact, and most of us treat them as such.

The result is subtle and not-so-subtle sabotage. Sleep, relationships, work, travel, leaving the house, eating out, revision, health, calmness itself — all of these can be quietly undermined by the stories the ego insists are true. Happiness, ease, optimism, playfulness, trust and radical self-honesty get sabotaged too. Remember: what we call “truth” is only what we currently believe to be true. When the belief system shifts, the truth shifts with it.

I share the story of a man who joined the course, left in anger after a few videos, rejoined, left again, and finally returned after a complete emotional breakdown. His doctor had told him OCD was genetic and therefore unchangeable. My work challenged that belief, so his ego decided I must be wrong. Only when enough external evidence piled up — forum comments, other people’s results, and eventually his own doctor mentioning a patient who had recovered through this process — did the rigid story crack. Suddenly he was ready to learn. He could see that truth often changes as perspective changes.

That is the central point. Staying rigidly attached to one version of the truth frequently blocks recovery. You can view life as fearful or as workable. Both are perspectives. Both feel true from the inside. One exhausts you; the other leaves more energy available for living.

I talk about the value of being sceptical but listening anyway — a principle that radically changed my own life. When my conditioned mind said “that’s ridiculous,” I trained myself to respond with “let me test it and then I’ll know.” Suspending disbelief long enough to try new perspectives is how I escaped the old patterns. I discovered that the mind and body are far more reprogrammable than I had been taught, that energy (thoughts, frequency, the field between people) has a measurable effect on how we feel and behave, and that shifting from the small-s self to the capital-S Observer opens options the ego simply cannot see.

The only person truly stopping your recovery is you — or more accurately, the small-s self, the eight-year-old protective ego and its old programming. Anxiety is a learned behaviour. Like top athletes who deliberately condition their minds for high-pressure performance, you can learn to accept the discomfort and rise above it by deciding what you want, talking yourself into it with optimism, and disregarding the stories that are not aligned with that intention.

I also outline common sabotage patterns I see repeatedly in people with complex personalities and complex anxiety:

– Becoming so fixated on the course itself that it becomes the new obsession, replacing one form of over-focus with another while still avoiding real-life action.
– Having belief systems triggered (genetic, religious, cultural, “I’m not enough” stories) so the material is dismissed before it is properly tested.
– Preparing endlessly — course after course, book after book — while never stepping into the actual living of a different life.

We never have all the knowledge the mind thinks we need. Experience comes from doing the thing, failing a few times, and improving. That is how competence and calmness are built.

There is a quiet battle going on. The small-s self tries to close you down through fear, doubt and drama, creating aversion to life. The capital-S Self wants you free — able to connect, try new things, find your voice, and become more attracted to life rather than afraid of it. The more you engage at a higher energetic frequency, the more the outcomes of your life begin to shift. The people who shrink and the people who expand are often in the exact same objective environment, yet they have completely different subjective experiences.

Exposure works for the same reason. The woman who got pulled onto the stage in the Nina Conti show felt vulnerable, took the action anyway, accessed her repressed playfulness, and came out the other side stronger. The audience saw courage. Her world did not end. That is intelligent exposure in real time: feeling the fear and still moving.

The invitation in this video is straightforward. Notice where your current “truths” are quietly sabotaging you. Be willing to suspend disbelief long enough to test new perspectives. Stop waiting until you feel ready or until you have perfect information. Decide what you actually want, then begin the repeated work of aligning your thoughts, energy and behaviour with that direction.

You can only proceed with recovery when you stop sabotaging yourself. And you stop sabotaging yourself by changing the beliefs and perspectives that have been running the show.

These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.

This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.

Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.

What is it you desire?

The next action is yours. Take it.

Much love, John
