Happiness, forgiveness and courage are not moods you wait for. They are conscious attitudes you can choose and act on — so your inner reality improves even when the outer world does not. This is a common-sense way of living.

Positive Conscious Attitudes: The One Thing You Can Actually Choose

Most of what happens out there is not under your control. A colleague snaps. Plans get cancelled. The weather ruins the day. Wi-Fi dies. You can influence some of it. You cannot guarantee the outcome.

What you can choose is the attitude you hold while it is happening.

I call these Positive Conscious Attitudes — PCAs. They are not mood-making or pretending the outer world is fine. They are the deliberate story you run on the inside so your inner reality does not have to obey every signal from the old brain.

Think of two systems. The unconscious is fast, automatic and messy. It throws up worries, judgements, victim stories, intrusive images and old habits. The conscious brain can analyse all that — and often gets addicted to doing so. You are neither of those. You are the observer: the rider of the horse. The horse will keep doing horse things until you retrain it.

Anxious people usually identify with the thinking. They try to think their way into better feelings. That is the wrong way round. We are emotional creatures who learned to think. Underneath the thinking there is a quieter knowing — the same kind of sense a dog has when it refuses food that is not good for it. No essay required. No guilt. No committee.

A PCA is how you side with that knowing instead of with the chatter.

You talk to yourself on purpose, slowly and decently, the way you would talk to a child you actually liked:

You can do this.
It will be interesting.
If I am late, I am late.
That is not my problem.
I can try this and find out.

The content does not have to be perfectly true yet. The body responds to what you hold in mind. Small optimistic fibs beat accurate self-abuse.

Acceptance is one of the most useful attitudes. The wallet is lost. You are late. The thing broke. That is what has happened. Resisting it adds a second problem. Accept it, then pick the next attitude: action, humour, repair. Do not rerun the story to collect pity.

Another is “yes to life.” When someone suggests something, go and have the experience. You retrain the unconscious to tolerate not knowing. You also collect a library of real stories instead of imagined disasters.

Another is refusing to reject yourself when you mess up. Other people may judge you. That is their inner reality. You do not have to join in.

Here is the part most people miss. Happiness, forgiveness, patience, courage and gratitude are not prizes you wait to feel. They are postures you can adopt because they serve you.

You do not forgive because the other person has earned it. You forgive so that story stops renting space in your head.

You do not act happy because the outer world has become fair. You act in a lighter way because your chemistry follows what you practise.
You do not wait until you feel brave. You do the thing while you feel exposed, and call that courage.

The unconscious will protest. It will say this is fake, or that you have no right, or that caring people should look more worried. That protest is old programming protecting an identity. You do not have to hold a public debate with it. You choose the attitude that makes your inner reality more livable, then you behave from it.

This is not lying to yourself on a grand scale. It is refusing to let an unhelpful feeling run the day. You can be late and still choose not to punish yourself. You can be hurt and still choose not to rehearse the injury. You can be tired and still choose one useful action. The feeling may lag behind. That is normal. Action trains the feeling more reliably than the other way round.

Do it for your own benefit. If someone else likes the new tone, good. If they preferred you anxious, small or guilty, that is information about them, not a reason to go back.

You can also switch gear by personality. Too tired to control everything? Settler attitude. Need movement and fun? Nomad. Need the thing done? Warrior. That is not a costume party. It is using more of yourself than the anxious default allows.

Family may not like this. “What have you got to be happy about?” “If you cared you would worry like I do.” Guilt only works if you sign the contract. You can decline it.

Calmness without action becomes stagnation. Action without a cleaner inner attitude becomes burnout. The point of PCAs is to make the inside livable enough that you can keep doing the outer work — ERP, skill, conversation, creation — without the old commentary vetoing every step.

You will still get stupid unconscious thoughts. I do. These days they mostly make me smile. I do not have to believe them, and I do not have to wait for motivation. I talk myself into the thing that is in my interest, then the motivation often turns up after I have started.

That is the whole method, dressed in ordinary language: choose the attitude, repeat it, act from it, ignore the roommate who argues. The roommate fades when it stops getting your attention.

My course teaches you how to do this.

This work reaches the mind, body and soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who stay in thinking and worrying.

What do you desire?

The next action is yours. Take it 🙂

These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.

This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.

Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.

What is it you desire?

The next action is yours. Take it.

Much love, John
