John Glanvill’s iStory ERP is a practical method for changing the internal stories that keep anxiety and Pure OCD going. Learn how this form of Exposure & Response Prevention rewires daily thinking patterns.
iStory ERP – The Missing Anxiety Link Most People Never Apply
Most people who try ERP only apply it to their big, obvious fears. They face the thing that scares them, sit with the discomfort, and try not to do the usual safety behaviour. That is useful, but it is only half the work.
The part that is almost always missing is what I call iStory ERP — internal Story Exposure and Response Prevention.
This is the process of deliberately changing the quiet, repetitive stories that run in the background of your mind all day long.
Anxious and Pure O brains are excellent at generating negative internal stories:
- “I’m not safe.”
- “I can’t handle this.”
- “Something bad will happen if I don’t check.”
- “I’m a bad person for having that thought.”
- “I need to be certain before I act.”
Every time you listen to these stories, analyse them, argue with them, or let them dictate your behaviour, you are accidentally practising Negative ERP. You are exposing yourself to the fear story and then responding in the old way — which strengthens the very system you want to weaken.
iStory ERP reverses this.
Instead of letting the old story run unchallenged, you consciously overwrite it with a new one that is more honest, more optimistic, and more aligned with the person you want to become. You do this repeatedly, throughout the day, until the new story starts to feel more natural than the old one.
This is not positive thinking or affirmation fluff. It is structured, deliberate retraining of the unconscious mind. It combines exposure (you still feel the old discomfort), response prevention (you stop feeding the old narrative), and the installation of a clearer, more useful internal story.
Examples of iStory ERP in practice:
Old story: “If I don’t get reassurance, I won’t be able to cope.” New story: “I can feel uncertain and still move forward. Reassurance is optional.”
Old story: “Having this thought means something is wrong with me.” New story: “My brain offers all kinds of nonsense. I no longer treat every thought as important.”
Old story: “I have to be certain before I act.” New story: “Action creates clarity. Waiting for certainty keeps me stuck.”
The more consistently you run the new stories, the more your unconscious mind begins to offer them automatically. Over time this changes how you feel, how you speak, and how you behave. People around you start responding to the new version of you, which further reinforces the change.
iStory ERP works on the small daily moments as much as the big fears. In fact, the small moments are often more important, because that is where the old programming is constantly being rehearsed.
This is the process I used myself and the one I teach throughout the course. It is practical, repeatable, and grounded in common sense. It does not require you to believe anything mystical — only that the stories you repeatedly tell yourself shape the life you end up living.
If you change the internal story, the external life begins to follow.

Access this video and over 60 others for $15 a month, along with guided meditations and practical workbooks. These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.
Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.
What is it you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
Much love, John
