Real recovery from anxiety and Pure O means becoming someone new, not returning to who you were. Stop the victim stance, take action, and build a stronger self.
With the right guidance and lots of effort massive change is possible.
Becoming Someone New: The Real Work of Recovering from Anxiety and Pure O
Many people arrive at recovery saying the same thing: “I just want to go back to who I was before this started.”
It is an understandable wish. The old self feels familiar and safe. Yet that version of you is the one that, over time, created the conditions for anxiety or Pure O to take hold. Returning to it simply rebuilds the same patterns. Lasting change requires becoming someone different — more decisive, more willing to feel discomfort, less dependent on certainty, and more engaged with real life.
This is not a harsh judgement. It is an invitation.
Recovery is less about removing symptoms so the old self can resume, and more about using the pressure of those symptoms to build a sturdier, more capable self. The old habits of overthinking, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, and postponing adult challenges have to be replaced. In their place come new habits: taking action even when feelings lag behind, trusting the body to handle automatic processes, directing energy outward into relationships, work, creativity and independence, and accepting uncertainty as part of a full life.
A crucial shift is moving out of the victim position. As long as the story remains “this is happening to me because of the OCD,” the person stays passive. The more useful stance is: “I have been running certain stories and behaviours that keep this going, and I can choose different ones.” Responsibility is not blame — it is power. When people stop waiting for the anxiety to disappear before they live, and instead start living in ways that expand their life, the anxiety often loses intensity as a natural side-effect.
Not everyone is ready for this. In practice, only a minority fully commit to the repeated, uncomfortable work of changing stance and behaviour. Others understand the ideas, feel temporary motivation, then drift back when the discomfort rises or when the familiar environment — family, partners, or old social patterns — gently pulls them toward the previous roles. Progress can feel threatening to the system that has grown around the anxiety. Those who succeed are usually the ones willing to become a new person even if it temporarily disrupts the old tribe.
The practical path is straightforward, though not easy. Direct your effort toward life itself rather than endlessly analysing the current theme. Practise positive, ordinary internal stories instead of rehearsing fear. Move toward the job, the conversation, the independence, the creative outlet, the relationship. Sit with the discomfort without immediately neutralising it. Repeat. Over time, the new actions and the new stories update the old programming.
You do not have to stay who you were. You can become someone who handles uncertainty with more courage, acts despite imperfect feelings, and builds the life that was being postponed.
That is the deeper recovery — not restoration of the past, but the creation of a more capable future self.
The work is available to anyone willing to begin – and I can help.

These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.
Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.
What is it you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
Much love, John
