Stuck Energy and Your (metaphoric) Atomic Battery
(This summary is drawn from Video 9 of the Calmness in Mind course.)
Anxiety is often treated as something to control, suppress or analyse away. A more useful starting point is to understand it as energy that has somewhere to go — and that sometimes ends up stuck.
At the simplest physical level we are made of atoms. Those atoms form molecules, cells, organs and eventually a living person. Emotions can be viewed as bursts of energy moving through that system. Something happens, energy rises, the body and mind respond, and under ordinary conditions the energy passes through and fades. Animals demonstrate this cleanly: they become activated, deal with the moment, then shake, move or otherwise discharge the leftover charge and return to baseline.
Humans frequently interrupt that sequence. We override the natural discharge with thinking, self-control, denial, politeness or the need to keep functioning. The energy that should have moved through as kinetic energy gets stored instead as potential energy. Over time these incomplete discharges accumulate.
In the model used in Video 9 there are two metaphorical batteries.
The first is the everyday emotional fuel battery. This is the reserve of usable energy that lets us think, act, recover and engage with life. Chronic worry, overwork, poor sleep and constant mental effort drain it. Recharging it requires the obvious foundations: less unnecessary mental activity, better rest, reduced drama and a calmer baseline.
The second is deeper. It can be called the atomic matter battery. It represents excess charge held in the system from earlier experiences that were never fully processed — trauma, loss, rejection, fear, humiliation, prolonged stress or any situation in which strong emotion was pushed down rather than allowed to complete. That stored potential energy does not disappear. It sits as a background load. People often experience it as heaviness, lethargy, unexplained tension, low-level anxiety, emotional numbness or a sense of being weighed down for no clear present-day reason.
This stored charge is not mystical. It is simply energy that was activated and then prevented from completing its natural cycle. The protective parts of the mind (the ego operating with the logic of a much younger self) often hide or rewrite the original events so that the person can keep functioning. The body, however, continues to carry the residue.
Recovery therefore involves two complementary movements. One is to stop continually draining the everyday emotional battery through excessive worry and over-control. The other is to create conditions in which the older, stuck charge can finally move and discharge. This is why approaches that only manage symptoms often produce limited results. If the underlying accumulation of undischarged energy remains, the system stays under load.
Practical work includes learning to feel emotional activation without immediately clamping down on it, reducing the stories that keep old material locked in place, and using structured methods (including properly applied exposure) that allow the nervous system to complete responses it previously interrupted. When excess charge begins to leave, people commonly report feeling lighter, less reactive and more able to meet ordinary life without the same background heaviness.
Anxiety, in this frame, is not only a set of thoughts to be corrected. It is also a signal that energy is mobilised and has not yet finished its journey. Learning to let that energy move — rather than endlessly managing its symptoms — changes the entire relationship with the problem. The atomic battery metaphor is simply a practical way of keeping that distinction clear: recharge what needs recharging, and discharge what has been stored too long.

Access this video and over 60 others for $15 a month, along with guided meditations and practical workbooks. These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.
Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.
What is it you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
Much love, John
