Becoming the Lead Character in Your Game of Life – or life will run you!
(This piece is drawn from Lecture 53 of the Calmness in Mind course.)
By this stage in the process, the central idea is simple. The work is not primarily about proving what is objectively true or false in the outer world. It is about deliberately shaping the inner conditions in which you live — mental calmness, self-regard, clearer direction, and a nervous system less easily thrown by fear, uncertainty and conflict.
Outer reality will continue to present difficulty, change and limits on control. That is given. What remains open to influence is the inner environment: the stories you run, the tone you take with yourself, the degree of unnecessary mental effort, the state of your body’s energy systems, and your willingness to act without needing guaranteed outcomes.
The process is cumulative and practical. It includes desensitising the nervous system through properly applied exposure so that fear no longer automatically dictates behaviour. It includes the physical foundations that support cellular energy — sleep, movement, nutrition, breath, and the release of older trapped charge. It includes the deliberate use of more constructive (or simply quieter) internal narrative so that the body receives different chemical instructions. Optimistic or neutral stories are not required to be factually perfect; they are used because the body responds to them and the resulting state is more workable.
A useful frame is to treat the inner world as a space over which you have considerably more authorship than the outer one. In imagination there are no external penalties for testing new ways of seeing yourself or the future. You can rehearse courage instead of catastrophe, self-respect instead of self-attack, or simply refuse to feed the old loops. The outer world still has shared constraints and consequences. The inner one is far more plastic.
This is not a claim that positive thinking overrides every circumstance. It is the observation that a large part of daily suffering is generated by the continuous internal commentary and the physiological states that commentary maintains. Reducing the commentary, improving the body’s baseline resources, and practising action in the presence of uncertainty change the lived experience even when external conditions remain imperfect.
Responsibility here is precise. You cannot control everything that happens around you. You can take fuller ownership of how you meet yourself in the midst of it — the quality of attention you bring, the stories you consent to run, the care you give the body that has to carry the load, and the decision to keep engaging with life rather than continually retreating from it.
Lecture 53 presents this as an ongoing process rather than a final arrival. The aim is a more reliable inner climate of calm, energy and self-direction, built through consistent practice, so that the inevitable difficulties of outer life no longer automatically colonise the whole of experience.

Access this video and over 60 others for $15 a month, along with guided meditations and practical workbooks. These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.
Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.
What is it you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
Much love, John
