Pure OCD thrives by shocking you with thoughts that contradict who you really are. Learn why it is a system rather than a personal failing, and how stopping the mental rituals and applying ERP to real life can starve it of power.
Pure OCD: Why It Attacks What You Value Most
(This is a summary from Lecture 57 of The Calmness in Mind Process about understanding and escaping Pure OCD).
Pure OCD (or Pure O) is not a disease you catch or a fixed part of who you are. It is a system that develops when the brain and nervous system become overloaded. It thrives on intrusive thoughts, unwanted images, urges, mental rituals, doubt, guilt, shame and exhaustion.
The key thing to understand is this: Pure O almost always attacks what you consciously value most. It shocks your attention with thoughts that are the complete opposite of who you actually are.
If you are a kind person, it may offer thoughts of harming others. If you are respectful around sexuality, it may offer taboo sexual images. If you care deeply about being a good person, it may offer thoughts of being immoral or blasphemous. If you love your partner, it may create endless doubt about the relationship.
These thoughts feel alarming precisely because they contradict your true nature. That is how the unconscious brain/mind system grabs and holds your conscious attention. Once it has your attention, it keeps you hooked through analysis, mental reviewing, reassurance-seeking, avoidance and internal arguing.
This is why waiting for the thoughts to stop before you live your life keeps you stuck. Every human brain produces unwanted, strange or frightening thoughts. Mental wellness is not the absence of those thoughts. It is the ability to stop treating them as important, urgent or meaningful.
You are not your thoughts. You are the observer of the thoughts your brain is currently proposing.
The practical way forward is not more understanding or more reassurance. It is to stop feeding the system. That means reducing the mental rituals, the checking, the researching, the confessing and the constant need for certainty. It means deliberately practising ERP — not only on the scary thoughts themselves, but on the life you actually want to live. (Videos 50 parts 1 to 5 detail my iStory ERP Process).
You walk toward the things the system has been telling you to avoid. You act according to who you wish to become, not according to the current noise in your head. You tolerate the uncertainty and the temporary rise in discomfort without performing the old safety behaviours.
Reassurance-seeking (whether from other people, the internet or yourself) is one of the biggest traps. It gives short-term relief while strengthening the system long-term and often creates unhelpful dependency.
Recovery is possible. Many people with Pure O are intelligent, creative and capable. Those traits can work against them when turned inward, but they become powerful assets once directed toward real life again. The people who make the biggest progress tend to show three qualities: they persist with the work even when it is uncomfortable, they learn to accept uncertainty, and they deliberately cultivate more optimism, courage and trust.
The thoughts may still appear from time to time. The difference is that they no longer run the show. You stop giving them meaning, stop negotiating with them, and keep moving toward the life you actually want.
That is how the system loses its power.

Access this video and over 60 others for $15 a month, along with guided meditations and practical workbooks. These are The Chronicles of Common Sense, forged from facing life directly and learning through real-world experience. They guided me out of anxiety, OCD, bipolar depression and crippling self-consciousness — and helped me become more trusting, energetic, optimistic, self-loving and courageous.
This work reaches mind, body and Soul. It gives you the tools to step courageously into the unknown. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we test it through action. Nature just knows that those who act, adjust, and act again (ERP) will always move further than those who remain stuck in overthinking and worrying.
Thinking is an Inner Reality Imagination. Action is an Outer Reality Event — and once you act, something will happen. The outcome is never fully in your control, but if the action is aimed at what you truly desire, it is always worthwhile.
What is it you desire?
The next action is yours. Take it.
Much love, John
